Background: The population ageing is a reality in contemporary society, which brings a range
of morphophysiological alterations that are leading to an increase of the prevalence of chronic
non-communicable diseases, especially the cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In this context, the
metabolic syndrome (MS) and the different types of dyslipidemias stand out as they are the risk
factors which contribute most to the CVDs.
Methods: The study is a quantitative research, conducted with users of all the Basic Health
Units (BHU) of the municipality of Patos. A sample constituted by 182 users who agreed to
take part in the research and signed the ICF. The instrument of data collection consisted of a
form containing the data to be evaluated for the diagnosis of MS, according to the NCEP/ATPIII
criteria, the lipid profile, according to the dyslipidemia guideline.
Results: It was observed that 72.5% of the patients had some type of dyslipidemia diagnosed
in laboratory, and the most prevalent type was the isolated hypertriglyceridemia present in
43.4%. Of the 89.6% with MS, these had some type of dyslipidemia diagnosed in laboratory,
continuing the isolated hypertriglyceridemia to be the most common type, present in 54.7%.
Conclusion: Due to the high prevalence of the dyslipidemias and MS in patients, associated to
the large number of asymptomatic patients who develop a serious cardiovascular condition
reinforces the need to intensify the practice of screening so as to help in the early diagnosis,
increasing the access to the basic health care.
