Introduction: Body dysmorphic disorder is a psychiatric condition defined as obsessive-
compulsive disorder, due to an exacerbated and distorted concern regarding physical
appearance, which impacts the search for plastic surgery and aesthetic procedures. Objective:
To analyze, in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder, whether plastic surgery and aesthetic
procedures improve self-esteem and quality of life. Methodology: Systematic review. The
protocol followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and the Core Items for Reporting
Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The review was registered through the Open Science
Framework platform, with the research question elaborated according to the PECO acronym:
in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder, did plastic surgery and aesthetic procedures
present any improvement factor? The 10 selected articles were extracted from several
databases, including the Virtual Health Library, Medical Publisher, Scientific Electronic
Library Online, ScienceDirect and Cochrane Library. Results: Most studies indicated that a
high proportion of people seeking plastic surgery and aesthetic procedures have body
dysmorphic disorder, mainly affecting women. It is also worth mentioning that most research
has shown that people with body dysmorphic disorder do not notice improvements after the
procedures, which shows that the results of the treatment can be unsatisfactory. Conclusion:
The search for aesthetic procedures and surgeries by patients with body dysmorphic disorder
persists and often does not result in satisfaction and may even worsen symptoms, except in the
case of rhinoplasty surgeries, which have shown effectiveness. Therefore, careful evaluation of
cosmetic surgery candidates is crucial to promote post-surgical contentment and improve
quality of life.
