AS RAÍZES DA POLUIÇÃO COMTEMPORÂNEA. GESTÃO DE EFLUENTES LÍQUIDOS E RESÍDUOS SÓLIDOS NA IDADE ANTIGA

Este artigo apresenta uma análise da poluição ambiental nas sociedades antigas. O trabalho é fruto do projeto de extensão em rede envolvendo a UNIFIP e CISCAM. Questões relacionadas com poluição, tratamento dos resíduos, uso das águas, difusão de doenças infeciosas são geralmente abordadas olhando para a idade contemporânea. Pelo contrário, este estudo – baseado numa profunda análise bibliográfica – procura analisar como as diferentes civilizações antigas lidaram com tais assuntos, a partir da revolução agrária do neolítico, e centrando a atenção na revolução urbana que se deu por volta de 4000 a.C. A pesquisa demonstra que o homem sempre foi um grande poluidor do ambiente externo, mas que, com o tempo e os processos de urbanização, procurou diminuir o impacto das suas atividades mediante medidas de vária natureza, principalmente através do uso de novas tecnologias. Este trabalho também demonstra que a forma como as questões ambientais foram enfrentadas ao longo da história antiga determinaram uma estratificação social de classe e com base na pertença sexual que se manteve durante muito tempo, pelo menos até a revolução industrial moderna, mas que em parte permanece até hoje.
